Latest Stuff :)

Hey guys sorry I haven't been around much. I have been very busy with real life and haven't had much time to come online lately.

First I wanted to address the slowness when making a comment. This has nothing to do with the server or our blogging script. The slowdown comes from Akismet which we use to filter for blog commenting spam. When someone makes a comment it contacts their database and cross references the comment title and content for known spam and filters it. I removed the Akismet functionality to test it out and the comments were added instantly so there is a slowdown when contacting their database which ends up slowing down the commenting. Lets give it a day and see if they fix it on their end before making any changes on our end. :)

I know some people are still waiting for their posts to be restored and I will get to that tonight. :)

- - - - - - - - -

Recently Periodically Demented made the suggestion of purchasing a server for our own use for EFx2Blogs rather then relying on Martin to host us. I do apologize to PD for not getting back to you sooner .. wasn't ignoring you in case you wondrered. :D

I do appreciate your enthusiasm and support but wanted to give some information before people started to get into this completely. I would have commented on PD's post but comments are opened but I think to only friends because I can't view them or make a comment so not sure what people have said so far.

Ok for the information .. The type of server we would need is a web hosting dedicated server which generally cost between $100 - $200 for the initial setup and first month. We won't actually own the server because it's more like rent where you pay once a month which depending on where you go and what kind of server specs you decide to get it can be anywhere from $70 - $200 a month.

Currently the monthly cost is the only thing that worries me because currently EFx2Blogs doesn't generate any revenue and the cost would have to come from me and I don't mind paying it but a bit worried that something could come up where I wouldn't be able to cover the cost and don't want to jeopardize things when things are so uncertain when it comes to cost especially when I am not exactly sitting comfortable with my own expenses.

I could do like what PD recommended and have a donation tally that shows the amount needed and the amount donated .. but instead of having for a one time server purchase .. have it for each month. Another option is to add back in the google ads which I would hate to do and don't really want to do. :/

As you can see with the past month of changes and additions I am more then willing to listen to suggestions so please give some if you have some suggestions. Getting our own server gives us a ton of freedom that we currently do not have but at the same time could be a risk .. maybe one worth taking. :)

i love the line....'I have been very busy with real life".
lol

i have been tinkering around recently writing a comedy bit 'bout the term 'real life', when used to describe life outside of the internet.

Idea for generating revenue...

I'm on a writer's forum and, last year, they put together a few compilation books with works submitted by the forum users, and published them through a site called lulu, which is a print-on-demand site. What with the advertising from the 50-or so forum members, a significant amount of money was raised through the sale of these books, and I believe the income stands currently at a few hundred pounds.

Efx2 has WAY more members than that forum. I know we have a lot of creative people on here. We could put something together, maybe a collection of short stories, poetry and photography, and get it published that way. Maybe hold a contest for cover design to spice up interest.

Just a thought. :)

That would be very cool. We have a ton of talented people and I would love to own something solid that I could treasure that comes from this community. :D

To be honest your suggestion blew me away .. never even thought of something like that before. I am very happy you suggested it. :)

I would love to do it even if it's not for fund raising because it sounds fun. This is a very rewarding way for everyone to contribute. Heh .. I am all excited and might even contribute some stuff myself. :P

Considering that I'm getting about 20 spams a day and Askimet is catching all of them, I'm willing to wait for a slight delay in comments posting.

Thanks for the explanation - now I understand it it's fine - I was just worried something wasn't working properly! I'd rather have a delay than spam any day.

Maybe I'll write an efx song ha ha! Seriously though Keith - PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a copy of my CD as I've had so much encouragement through people here I don't know if I'd have got this far without the lovely support of people here! It should be ready before Christmas.

i'm wondering what renting a server would change? I'm sure you'd get more control over it's configuration, but it would still be remotely located and managed by a technician right?

also, does the current setup use a seperate database server, or is it on the same server as the site?

and you never replied to my PM.

I saw PD's post about buying our own server and the though that crossed my mind was "does Keith want that kind or responsibility" it's good to know we wouldn't be forcing something on you that you didn't want. I'm all for you running the show completely and you can expect us to chip in when the time comes.

Did I do this? :)

Keith, I'm actually a little lost with techno-babble (although you'd never guess) and I think I may be a bit more ambitious than you. My proposition was that we save up for a physical server in your home, and not just web hosting. I see it as a project to aim for. I'm glad you're hosting this conversation now because I really much prefer to have a private blog.

My idea was/is:

1. Save for a server.
2. Work out sustainable funding for bandwidth.

I'm assuming you know enough about hardware to know what part to kick if it jams up.

Slowly uploading comments

Posted by logis at 1:38 PM

Hi Keith,

Could you please do something about the slowly uploading of the comments? I make about 100 comments a week. Each comment takes three minutes to upload which makes that i have three hundred minutes or 5 hours i see spoiled because of this.

Also, if an efx2 book comes out make sure you can give out the BIC and IBAN numbers of the bank account where you can pay to order this book. Those codes are needed for international banking. It would be useful for europeans like me who dont have paypall.

Logis, if you read above you'll see that Keith has explained the comment situation and what he plans to do. I make tens of comments every day - it's less irritating if, while you're waiting for the page to load, you just drag it out of the way / minimise it and carry on browsing in another window.

As for the book - I've already had one published through Lulu and they're international with many ways of paying - and yes, they provide BIC and IBAN numbers. :)

Explaination & Ideas ... Check!

Thanks for letting us know about the slowdown. I agree ... the slight delay is much better than a bunch of spam ... :D

Since money IS a problem with me ... but creativity IS NOT ... Del's excellent suggestion has finally given me a way to actually help our "family" ... now I will just have to figure out what I can do. Maybe go through some of my old posts, some of my art ... or something.

Count me in ... :D

WelshPixie,

I did read Keith's explanation. I knew it has to do with the spam check. I didn't think of browsing further in another window. So thanks for that suggestion. Guess it shows how stupid i am not coming up with that idea myself. :D

I love the idea of being on our own server, and the idea for the book to raise some funds.
I *so* want to get published (even if it's for a limited audience :), so tell me who to send stories to!
Back to the server issue - Would love it if keith would do a pro and cons list comparing having our own server and being on a rented one. At least we IT-not-so-literates could understand what goes in your head. ;)

I actually toyed with the idea of making my blog into a Lulu book. Just for the family. But it might work in other ways too :)

I'd rather go with a subscription service or a donation run for a permanent physical server at Keith's home. Kinda feel safest from an economical point of view :)

EFX2's Own Server

Posted by womanoffeathers at 3:16 PM

I would also go for a physical server in Keith's home for a lot of reasons.

Two main reasons ... I would feel that it was in safe and capable hands and he could also be the one to rent out to others to help with the upkeep.

I have no extra cash at the moment so I really like the idea of a book. I'll see what I can dig up that might be of interest! maybe for those of us less talented in writing poetry and short stories we could do one on cooking?

The Book & Donations

Posted by Cabinfeveronline at 10:23 AM

Achairde All:

As long as we don't forget the non-fiction writers I think it's a great idea. ;) However, I feel that if everyone paid $5.00 a month to blog here we would be in better shape. I know I pay $9.00 every three months to store my photos at Photo Bucket. Why can't we do the same thing here?

Surely, that's not to much to ask for the space, Keith and the Managers who put in hours for free and for the fact that this is the best damn place to blog on the web. We have a sense of community, mutual respect and love for one another you just won't find at 360, Live Journal, My Space or Facebook, etc.

One good thing that came about when we lost the other server was that we aren't divided into EFx2 and ModBlog Refugees anymore. WE ARE ALL EFx2 blogs PEOPLE NOW. So let's go all the way and make sure we never have it happen again. Either through a modest subscription fee or a book.

Personally, I would like to see us be a wee bit more ambitious. We have artists, photographers, poets and the like. Why not sell these items for revenue with a certain percentage going towards EFx2blogs? I know that I would pay for a signed photo, a book of recipes or poems or a T-shirt with some of the beautiful artwork I see around here. The coder's could sell customized templates for that matter.

Also, we could publish a site directory of all the bloggers with a bio and a pic of their sites. Everyone who wants to be listed pays a certain fee to be included. The more info the higher the fee. We could use a sliding scale from $5 to $15.00. This is how organizations such as the PBA raise money and it works. We could Adobe an online copy very easily.

I realize that this sounds a bit ambitious but it's really not. One thing about working Human Rights is that I have had to raise funds for various groups along the way. (Putting on a concert with five bands, a fashion show and selling t-shirts wasn't all that difficult for me and we didn't have PayPal then!)

There are two things I can still do- write and raise money (which includes a lot of PR work.) I have helped a few organizations set up such stores and they've proved to be profitable. After Gorman, I would do anything gratis to make sure that we're never at the mercy of a 3rd party again!

If you'll pardon the pun, "Let's think outside the box!"

Cabinfever gave me an idea. Rather than donating a track - how about I donate a dollar for every album I sell to Efx2 people or their friends! That way everyone benefits - ha ha - I encourage you guys to buy a CD, Efx gets some dosh and hopefully you enjoy the CD - maybe we could have a "market" blog where people could list things for sale to efx members. Maybe people would hate this idea as too pushy! Thoughts? After all - any CDs I sell here I wouldn't have sold if I didn't have a blog here.

We *will* accept non-fiction, but only if it's something that would be of interest to readers. I.e., nothing too personal that might only be understood or appreciated by a limited audience of readers. We want stuff everyone will enjoy.

Hi Keith. I hope you and the family are well. There are some current grumblings about Community Leaders having access to blogs, including private posts and friends only posts. I sort of understand why you'd give this power, and hopefully without starting yet another dull and tedious war of words from those who don't read but think they know it all, could you please give a bit more insight into it?

For myself, I have to say on this issue I don't like that level of access. My blog is for buddies only. There are full names, addresses, photos and such, as well as a lot of highly personal information. I really don't want current and future strangers peering into my private area. If they or anyone else was welcome I'd invite them myself. I want the power to choose.

Thanks again for all the great work you've done, and also to Welsh Pixie, LazyBoy, and Chica who have very visibly done a lot to help efx2 grow.

I didn't have a problem with the blog wide post thingie that LB/CP did, it was the best way to get peoples attention about the trackbacks spamming problem, but I am quite uncomfortable with CL's having so much access to our blogs, there are some for-my-eyes-only rants in my blog and I sure don't want anybody else reading them.
I can understand that you need people that can keep tabs on the community when you are busy but perhaps there is some way they can have only partial access to everyones blogs? or only as much access as members are willing to give them?

Hey Keith,

Long time, no see. You have me intrigued with your suggestion of looking towards a dedicated server for EFx2.

I like to think I have a handle on these sorts of things and am interested in helping however I can, so I'd like to chat with you about the possibilities when/if you have some free time.

I hope you got the donation I sent in a couple months ago. Hit me up on MSN when you get a chance.
